Bruce surely knew Nat King Cole’s original 1946 version–it had been firmly established as an R&B classic for a full quarter-century before Bruce first attempted it in concert. But it’s The Rolling Stones’ version that seems to have most directly inspired The Bruce Springsteen Band’s arrangement. The Stones’ memorable version was the opening track of their very first album. And if you listen to this recording of The Bruce Springsteen Band from September 1, 1971, it’s clear that Bruce is hewing closely to the Stones’ version (before it veers off into jam territory, anyway). Interestingly, we can clearly hear Bruce delivering a classic Chuck Berry riff at around the 1:30 mark in the clip above, which might lead us to believe that perhaps Bruce also had Berry’s cover in mind: Except: as you can hear in the recording above (which is actually what influenced the Stones’ version), Berry is actually pretty restrained guitar-wise. His trademark riff never really appears. So perhaps Bruce was merely paying homage to Berry rather than directly covering him. In any event, Bruce would go on to cover “Route 66” a half-dozen times throughout the 1970s and 1980s, always in small venues and almost always without the presence of tapers. It would be almost a full quarter-century before we’d get a clear, circulating recording of Bruce covering “Route 66” again, but it was worth the wait. Bruce surely knew Nat King Cole’s original 1946 version–it had been firmly established as an R&B classic for a full quarter-century before Bruce first attempted it in concert. First performed: September 1, 1971 (Long Branch, NJ) Last performed: November 13, 1994 (Castaic, CA)
