The best time for planning a trip on Route 66 is from May to October. In June, the weather is much more stable, but it’s still not as hot as in the middle of summer. I consider September and June to be the two most ideal months for travel. During an Indian summer you can enjoy a great ride along the entire Route 66.

I don't know that there's a best time, but: I'd say that avoiding winter as Chicago and thereabouts can be snowbound and the worst of the heat, crowds and higher prices of July and August make a deal of sense. Another vote for september/october. If you go in September/early October, there is no reason to use a tour company. Another vote for September/October. The weather is still rather nice in the north and the hottest was Needles, CA, at about 85 degrees on my trip. We done route 66 in September/October last year, was a great time of year to do it,we had fab weather every almost every day.

For the full "Route 66 experience" you'll want to travel between April and October. On the extreme ends of this spectrum (April and October) you'll have a much quieter experience but with less predictable weather. May and September are good months for those trying to avoid the extreme heat, busier roads and inflated rates. June, July and August is the busiest period where the temperatures (and prices) reach their peak.
