Waarom is Route 66 zo belangrijk voor de Amerikaanse folklore?

De route zou zich in de Amerikaanse cultuur nestelen. Tijdens de crisis van de jaren ’30 trokken veel mensen over deze route naar het westen, op zoek naar een plek waar het leven beter was dan in de door droogte en armoede geteisterde Dust Bowl. Daarmee werd de route een symbool voor de American Dream. Bobby Troup bezong de weg: “If you ever plan to motor west/Travel my way, the highway that’s the best/Get your kicks on Route 66!” Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de route ook populair onder toeristen die voor vakantie naar het westen trokken. Delen die nog wel open zijn, worden als Historic Route aangeduid en zijn populair onder toeristen die met de auto een rondreis Amerika maken en langs de route de geschiedenis van Amerika willen zien.

Route 66 maakt officieel geen onderdeel meer uit van het wegennet, maar fungeert nog altijd als een enorme toeristische trekpleister. De route, die door de staten Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona en Californië liep, moest vooral het vrachtwagenverkeer een enorme dienst bewijzen. De nieuwe superweg staat daarom ook wel symbool voor het opkomende Amerika, met nieuwe kansen en hoop op een beter leven. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog nam de populariteit van Route 66 een vogelvlucht. Tot op de dag van vandaag is de herinnering aan de magische supersnelweg nog altijd zeer levendig en verleidt het toeristen vanuit de hele wereld tot de transatlantische oversteek.
