Driving on Ogden Ave in Chicago during the day is reasonably safe. If you were beginning the trip directly from the starting point of Rte 66 in the Loop and heading towards Ogden Ave from there, you would be picking up Ogden just to the south of the United Center, on the West side of Chicago, and the first several miles do go through some sketchy parts of Chicago. We are from the uk and travelled route 66 a few years ago without any problem at all. Just keep an eye out as you would traveling anywhere. The worst I've had happen was at a gas station stop in Santa Rosa. A young woman approached my brother selling "perfume" and tried to put a cloth over his face. This was early evening with plenty of people and traffic around. He waved her away and still had his wallet.

Route 66 is no more or less dangerous than any place in the US. I’ve ridden/driven it several times. I got beat up in Gallup, NM once, but no other problems. Maybe avoid Gallup. In general Route 66 is safe. It is a safe route... but like anywhere both in the US or elsewhere, trust your senses... The biggest issues are in urban areas, like all over the world... out on the road, worries are few. Chicago isn’t the safest city, but in general this should be a safe trio. Will all us cities they have sections of town thst are poor neighborhoods thst tend to have higher crime rates. In the tourist areas of the city or places with a bunch of hotels near each other these places are generally safer but on city streets you can get smelly theft anywhere like someone sterling your phone or bag.
